Cleaning. It touches several senses, doesn’t it? “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” is the first thing I heard while envisioning nuns. Next I thought of the extreme diagnosis of OCD in today’s jargon. Did you think of Jack Nicholas? And how many of you immediately “smelled” Pine Sol? Or Clorox? And then did you “feel” it? I can relive that feeling of still-damp, freshly mopped floors and smell that aroma like it was yesterday…
And then I think about all of the toxic chemicals I was putting into my body by inhalation and through the pores of my feet.
Yes, you read that correctly. Are you aware of the dangers lurking in our “all too normal” cleaning routines today? Americans have been lulled to sleep with the powers of marketing and chemistry, but there are a few waking up.
Cancer is far too common. Disease is more normal than health it seems. Infertility in the United States is at an all-time high. Even young people haven’t been spared from the tyranny of tragedy sweeping our country and the world. Why? This list could almost be endless, but a viable concern is the synthetic chemicals placed in our hands to keep our families “healthy.” We’re trained to be antibacterial, germ-free, sanitized, disinfected, and more, because science has proven how bacteria and viruses are spread, how disease can be spread. Did they ever study the effects of those antimicrobials on our bodies or just how effective they were in killing the desired prey?
I’ll only cover a fraction of the toxic chemicals placed in our laps in this entry, but I pray it helps open your eyes to the self-sabotage of our culture, making you delve deeper into research about the items you have placed in your home.
The first list will be endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is responsible for hormones, which affect every age and gender. Ever heard of triclosan, paraben, “fragrance,” phthalates, or oxybenzone? Each of these interrupt normal endocrine function by mimicking our natural hormones. Just this sampling is found in toothpastes, soaps, deodorants, cosmetics, shampoos, lotions, packaged foods, perfumes, sunscreens, and you guessed it, cleaners. So picture this: You’ve given your child the job of cleaning the kitchen countertops after dinner. You give them a paper towel and a spray bottle. With skin absorption, they take in these hormone counterfeits and change the way their body manufactures and uptakes their own naturally-produced hormones. Want to hear more?
Let’s talk about cellular disruption. What does that mean? Synthetic chemicals change the DNA of our cells, so when the cells replicate, they have been mutated or modified in some way, no longer functioning as God designed. Familiar with sodium laureth, laurel sulfate, paraben, polyethylene glycol (PEG), “fragrance,” phthalates, or oxybenzone? Notice any repeat offenders? And they’re in your household cleansing products too, along with lots of personal care items.
How about things that are banned in other countries because of developmental fetal disruption like toluene? Triclosan has been banned, as well as methychloroisothiazolinone, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, and DMDM hydantoin? Formaldehyde is on all new carpets, furniture, clothing that you try on at the store, and then sometimes you wear it without washing it first!
Have you heard enough? Have your eyes been opened? I could give you more gory details and long chemical names, but I’d prefer for you to just go searching in your home for these right now and THROW THEM AWAY. Your family deserves more than a synthetic chemical footprint in their DNA. They deserve to be well, the way God intended them.
“But wait,” I just heard you say, “what am I going to clean with? How can I kill all the germs?” Young Living has produced a fabulous product called Thieves. There’s household cleaner, waterless hand purifier, soap, detergent, dishwashing liquid, and more. It’s made with the stuff God made on the third day of creation—plants. WHAT? Yes, it’s plant-based and will do the trick, all without harming your family. So breathe easy – literally – knowing that you’re not taking in toxic chemicals but cleaning as God has provided, through nature.
