Light & Sustenance

I love how God speaks. In a split-second, lightning fast, with so few words, multitudes of knowledge and wisdom come pouring forth, like a fountain overflowing its boundaries. Just such an event occurred again today; a simple act brought forth such enlightenment.

I was playing with my cat. Yes, that was the act that instigated this marvelous revelation. Cats are amazing creatures. Being a biology major, I love to see how God has specialized each creature to fulfill its call within the ecosystem. (Yes, I also know the ecosystem was radically changed upon the fall of man, but God in His sovereignty already accounted for that.) If you watch a cat’s pupils very closely, they begin to open to almost the entire size of the iris whenever the cat is stalking its prey. Maggie’s eyes were fixated on my finger at the edge of the counter when this phenomenon occurred then…BAM! She slapped my finger (she doesn’t use her claws when we are playing–no worries!). Lightning fast, my finger would have been dead prey.

Then it happened. God asked me, “Why do her pupils open so big?” “To let in more light. The more light, the more clearly she can see and the faster she can react.” BOOM! It went off in me like a rocket. Don’t you just love when that happens? The end result of her “hunting” is to be fed, to give her sustenance. More light equals being fed and being fed quickly. Out of my spirit “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord” welled up. Ephesians 1:18 AMP docked simultaneously: “By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you…”

When our eyes, the eyes of our heart, open towards Him, they are flooded with light. “…God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.” 1 John 1:5 NLT. “The more light, the more clearly [I] can see and the faster [I] can react.“  We are quickly fed. Being fed leads us to fulfill His call upon our lives. His call gives sustenance.
